Reiki: symbol and magnetism

The Reiki symbol: 霊気

The word Reiki is written in Japanese with two characters: 霊 (Rei) and 気 (Ki). Rei means “universal”, Ki means “vital energy”. Together they form “Universal Life Energy”.

Reiki is an energy practice of Japanese origin, developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. My practice rests on a Reiki lineage that goes directly back to Mikao Usui.

The Usui Reiki symbols are passed on during training, from the 2nd degree onwards, following the traditional protocol and in person only.

Reiki and magnetism

What is the difference?

Magnetism

A magnetiser usually works from a personal gift, and acts with their own energy.

Reiki

The practitioner does not give their own energy: they are a channel for universal energy. Reiki is passed on by initiation, from a Master Teacher to their student, and anyone can learn it.

A companion, not a healer

I see the Reiki practitioner as a companion, not as a healer. The effects of Reiki energy depend on the receiver’s own self-healing process.

How to choose your Reiki Master?

1. Check the training and the lineage

The lineage

A Master Teacher must be able to show you their lineage, that is the unbroken chain of transmission going back to the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui.

Qualifications

Make sure they have completed the required degrees (notably the 3rd or 4th degree, depending on the school) and are specifically trained to teach: some practitioners are “master practitioners” but do not teach.

The course format

Choose in-person teaching, especially for the initiations (reiju): Reiki requires a direct energetic transmission, which is hard to do 100% online.

How to choose your Reiki Master?

2. Examine the ethics and the framework

Transparency

A good teacher is clear about the content of their courses, the length of the training, the prices, and the handbook and certificate given at the end.

No cult-like drift

Avoid messianic talk, promises of miracle cures, excessive prices or demands for lifelong commitment to an organisation. Reiki is a personal path of well-being and growth, not a religion.

Follow-up

A serious teacher often offers follow-up, review evenings or exchanges after the course, to support the student in their practice.

How to choose your Reiki Master?

3. Trust your own feeling

The first contact

Take the time to call, talk to or meet several teachers before you enrol.

The feeling

You must feel trust, heard and respected. Intuition plays a big part in choosing the person who will awaken your energy channel.

Word of mouth

Feel free to ask for recommendations from students who have already been taught by this person.

My code of ethics

A pledge of transparency and trust

By signing and displaying this charter, I show my commitment to an authentic, caring and respectful practice of Usui Reiki.

1. Respect for Usui Reiki ethics

I practise Reiki according to the principles established by Mikao Usui, and apply its ideals in my teaching, my support and my interactions with others.

2. Authentic transmission

I pass on Usui Reiki in person only, with no remote initiation, following the traditional protocol.

3. Respect and care

I am a companion, not a healer. I refrain from any judgement or diagnosis, and I respect each person’s path.

4. Complementarity

Reiki is complementary to medicine. I always recommend seeing a doctor for any medical issue.

5. Confidentiality

What you share with me stays confidential. No personal data is shared, exchanged or sold.

6. Humility and responsible transmission

The title of Reiki Master means responsibility and respect. I always present my lineage, which goes back to Mikao Usui.

7. A free, non-dogmatic practice

Usui Reiki is independent of any religion. My teaching respects each student’s freedom, without imposing beliefs.
